Hi Linda!
I just joined the forum tonight and just read a few comments etc. I too am looking for answers and pain relief and most of all how to avoid ANY surgeries - and so far I believe that's going to be possible, but it will defintely take work.
I had a very short intro to Pilates, bought a video tape off the TV ad, read the box and all the info that came with it and sent it back. I felt it was more of the generic 'things/exercises' that they show and tell EVERYONE to do, no matter what your problems are. I didn't want that nor did I trust it because of my specific challenges.
I DID order the LOSE THE BACK PAIN SYSTEM - 2 DVD's, cd's and workbook. Jesse and Steve actually SHOW you how to test yourself to find out exactly which muscles are weak and which are strong and teach you just how to strengthen the weak muscles --- and tell you NOT to exercise your strong muscles so you can attain the proper balance YOU need for YOUR needs. Have you looked into that and read their info on it? Now that I'm telling you about it, I'm convincing myself how I need to get back to it and put it to the real test. Steve H DID tell me that it should be done ALONG WITH the inversion table. I've had such good relief with just the inversion table, I've been lazy and haven't done the exercises and balancing 'act' yet.... :)
Be sure and look into that. It's only $97 , I think, and I believe you'll get much better success with their program to suit YOUR specific needs.
I'd say that's the less expensive way to start.
But for the fastest pain relief, the inversion table would definitely be the way to go.
I don't know what spondelothesis is, but I'll guarantee you that the inversion table with bring you terrific relief from ALL the rest of the challenges you have.
then, if you'd still want extra pain relief, try their 1 month Free trial of Lifezyme - it's ALL natural and takes down inflamation in a BIG way!! I love that stuff!
let me know what you decide.
I'm really doing well Linda! I apologise for missing a link, but my original post seems not to have gone up! Pilates is a core strengthening exercise system. I did Body Control Pilates. This can be as gentle as you wish, in fact it majors on slow precise movements to re-balance you and progresses at your own pace. Not recommended for those who want it for cardio workouts!
I see you have similar problems to mine. I went via surgery before finding all the alternatives. In spite of the risks it worked for me (I insisted on a Neurosurgeon doing it, rather than an orthopaedics person). Thus, must of the work I have done since has been about putting right what the physiotherapist did to me, so I guess I see it from aslightly different angle to some. I have to say that the inversion therapy really worked well in reducing my disk bulges.
I haven't checked your location 'cos this is a UK site and "Body Control Pilates" is UK based. There are other forms of Pilates out there, one is "Flow Control" for example. If you are looking for back pain relief, you will have to look at the small print. Flow Control is a more dance routine system of general application and is for use with the genral public, whereas the Body Control and others have a remedial application - closer to the original system. I was lucky to find a phyiotherapist trained in the system and she tailored it to my injuries. If you google "Joseph Pilates" you will find the story. BTW, in case you didn't know - Pilates is pronounced Pill-art-ees.
Hope that helps.
Best

About Me:
I am a 51 year old female. I have spinal stenosis, bulging disc, spondelothesis, and sciatica down the left leg. I have been suffering with the pain down my left leg for a year now. I've tried several things for relief, from physical theraphy, nerve blocks, acupuncture, theraputic massages, the DRX 9000 (very expensive I might add) and I am still suffering. Oh, did I mention pain pills, anti infammatories? I have worked in an office setting for over 30 years and feel that this has contributed to alot of my problems. I just recently purchased the backjoy seat cushion, so I'm hoping this may give some relief. I've tried several other homepathic remedies too., from liquid drops to pills. Very frustrated.
